GSGES has many international students, foreign researchers, and female researchers and students. We also have many male and female researchers and students who are involved in childcare or nursing care. To support their studies, research, and education, GSGES and Kyoto University have undertaken various initiatives.

GSGES Initiatives

We consistently act in a manner that takes into account the diverse constituencies present in our laboratories and classes, as well as at our events. GSGES students are given the opportunity to engage with various cultures and perspectives, while faculty members provide support to help them develop appropriate and respectful behaviors.

For Students

Academic Support

  • Various documents, including the Curriculum Guidelines, are available in both English and Japanese.
  • English-speaking staff are also available in the office to assist students.

Gender Equality

  • We offer a multipurpose room exclusively for women, designed for nursing, rest, and childcare.

Student Life

  • We assign tutor faculty members to all students. For newly enrolled international students, we provide support through Kyoto University’s tutoring system.
  • Field training, a required course for master’s students, is conducted as an overnight program and it serves as a valuable opportunity for communication between students and faculty members.
  • A consultation service is available to address a variety of concerns.

【Consultation Service】

  • Student Affairs Office: The Student Affairs Office is available to provide consultation on issues related to student life and answer questions regarding academic matters.
  • Harassment Consultation Service (GSGES)
Counselors (GSGES faculty and staff) are responsible for handling consultations on harassment.

The consultation services respond to inquiries, provide information, and refer matters to the appropriate person in charge. If necessary, the system will be developed by a committee dedicated for this purpose.

For Faculty and Staff

Support for Education and Research Activities:

  • English-speaking staff are available in the GSGES office.
  • FD training and harassment prevention training are offered to faculty members, providing them with opportunities to acquire the knowledge they need for the educational field.
  • To support work-life balance, we are actively reducing workloads by utilizing online tools, reviewing meeting schedules, etc.

Gender Equality

  • A multipurpose room exclusively for women is available for breastfeeding, rest, and childcare.
  • We have a subsidy system for the study field when faculty members are on parental leave. This system covers the costs of hiring staff to assist with laboratory operations.
  • When recruiting researchers, we take into account periods of childbirth and childcare in our selection process to ensure that women are not disadvantaged.

General

  • A consultation service is available to address various concerns related to research and education.

【Consultation Service】

  • General Affairs Section: The General Affairs Section is available to provide consultation on a wide range of topics, including research and education, gender equality, and employment matters.

Gender Equality Promotion System

We have established a system comprising the Gender Equality Promotion Committee (a deliberative and decision-making body), the Gender Equality Promotion Working Group (an operational unit), and a counseling service. This system provides tailored support for childcare, nursing care, and career development based on the needs of individual researchers.

Kyoto University Initiatives

In addition to the GSGES initiatives, Kyoto University offers a range of other services and support systems. For more information on Kyoto University’s basic philosophy and policies, as well as resources for balancing childcare and nursing care with education and research, please click here.
