Kyoto University International Symposium 2024
The Kyoto University International Symposium 2024 on Education and Research in Global Environmental Studies in Asia: Measures and Perspectives of Human Resource Development through International Environmental Cooperation took place in a hybrid format on December 3, 2024, with the Royal University of Agriculture (RUA) in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, as the main venue. The symposium brought together 360 participants, including researchers, students, and private sector representatives, from 48 organizations across 22 countries, primarily in Asia.
The event began with opening remarks by President Nagahiro Minato of Kyoto University, Dean Chihiro Tanaka of the University’s Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies (GSGES), GSGES Professor Hirohide Kobayashi, the symposium organizing committee chair, and Rector Ngo Bunthan of RUA, some of whom spoke remotely. This was followed by two keynote speeches by the Graduate School’s vice dean, Professor Izuru Saizen and Vice Rector Huon Thavrak of RUA. The presentations highlighted past research activities, future perspectives, and educational models developed through interdisciplinary and international collaboration. Afterwards, young researchers and students presented posters and engaged in discussions across three thematic fields: (1) Environmental Technology, (2) Natural Resources, and (3) Global Ecology. Lively discussions took place during the poster presentations and Q&A sessions.
In the afternoon, a panel discussion was held featuring representatives from Kyoto University, RUA, Hue University of Agriculture and Forestry, IPB University, Bandung Institute of Technology, and Hanoi University of Science and Technology. The discussions centered on strengthening educational curricula through inter-university collaboration. A collaborative session also provided an opportunity to introduce individual research projects and explore possibilities for cooperation and joint research.
An awards ceremony followed, recognizing the recipients of the Best Poster Awards, which GSGES Dean Tanaka presented. Finally, the symposium concluded with closing remarks from RUA Vice Rector Huon. The symposium proved a significant platform for enhancing interdisciplinary and international networks, improving educational curricula, and advancing international collaborative research. It was a valuable opportunity for young researchers to gain new perspectives through research presentations and networking. The symposium is anticipated to lay the groundwork for cooperation toward a sustainable future.
