Ambassador Oya and Researcher Sen from the Embassy of Japan in Malawi visited the ELSaN project site. They visited a farmer’s home in the Lusangazi area, which is the closest to Mzuzu City, and observed the actual toilets and fields. In this field, the farmers and project members explained that they were conducting a maize demo plot using six types of manure and fertilizers, including manure from the toilets (ECOSAN manure) and urine-based manure. By observing the actual fields, it was a good opportunity for them to understand that the manure obtained from the toilet has an effect equivalent to that of chemical fertilizers.
From the representative of Tiyeni, our counterpart, he explained their recommended Deep Bed Farming method (an agricultural method that minimizes water runoff through deep plowing and wide beds) and their commitment to promoting it even after the project ends.
